Finding the Right Smoothie Recipes

food

Choosing the right recipes for smoothies for you depends very much upon your own personal preferences. Everyone has their own favorite fruit, it is just a case of combining the right ones to give you the flavor that you want. Then there is the liquid base – some fruit are better suited to a fruit juice base, whereas others work better with a dairy base.

Sometimes it is matter of trial and error, but in fact most soft fruits work well in smoothies. Some harder fruit, such as apples, can work if you chop it very finely prior to adding it to the mixture, and even then the result can be a little lumpy. A great addition for when you are looking for an instant chilled smoothie is to use some frozen fruit. There is no need to defrost it, just add it straight to the mixture.

You should avoid adding sugar to your smoothies as this will only add to the calorie count. For most smoothie recipes there will be no need for sweetening due to the natural sugars that are in the fruit. If you really do need to sweeten your smoothie then you could add a little honey. Whilst honey contains the same amount of calories as sugar, you need less of it and does have other beneficial properties.

Here is an example of a smoothie recipe – a Raspberry, Pineapple and Banana Smoothie. Firstly, you will need the following ingredients:

2 Bananas, cut into pieces
240ml/8fl.oz Pineapple Juice
120ml/4fl.oz. Natural Yogurt (preferably low fat)
175g/6oz Raspberries
4 Ice Cubes, crushed

All you need to do is combine all the ingredients above and use a blender to blend to a smooth liquid. If you find that the resulting mixture is too thin then simply add more fruit. If it is too thick then add more pineapple juice. Personally, I like this smoothie for breakfast.

Whilst there are many commercially made smoothies available, home-made smoothies are so much better tasting and actually much better for you.
